In 2015, Transurban completed a proof of concept, which took various sources of data from our roads (including traffic volumes and control systems data) as well as weather data and some other publicly available sources of data to determine correlations between certain road conditions and accidents. 

By doing so, we were able to predict the likelihood of an accident 30 minutes ahead of it happening with a high level of accuracy. 

This type of intelligence allows us to divert and manage traffic to prevent accidents from occurring - enhancing safety and preventing disruption to the network.

Analysing our data, we identified Sundays as the high risk time for accidents on CityLink when speeds are higher and traffic is less dense. This information can be applied to real-world traffic management practices and the proactive use of real-time messaging signs to keep people alert and aware on the roads on Sundays.

As more cars become internet connected, there is the potential for road operators like Transurban to interact and use visual displays in the car to send messages to drivers. In the future, roadside systems will be able to interact directly with vehicles without the need to notify drivers through messaging systems.

In the 2016 financial year we are further investing in our analytics capabilities and investigating how we can apply advanced techniques to road and traffic operations. We are also progressing our digital program to build data products that enable the transition to internet connected ITS.
